Why I consider Watchmen to be a good movie

Not many movies get this many paradoxical reviews and feedback, and least of all superhero movies. Some people talked about a blue dick, while others said that the movie was too long. Well yes, Watchmen is a 3 hours movie, but unlike shitty far-too-long movies, wishing to get back the last 3 hours of my life wasn’t the thought to cross my mind when the movie ended. Watchmen is in fact a good movie, despite what some people would say. I’ve seen better movies of course, but that doesn’t mean that this one is the mistake some said it was.

The movie is an adaptation of the Watchmen comics, and since I haven’t had the chance to read them, I can’t really judge how faithful Zack Snyder and the screenwriters were to what is found in the comic books. But from a cinematic point of view, I can say that Zack Snyder did a good job in directing the movie, with his old fashioned and violent action scenes. Watchmen’s fighting scenes weren’t that different from 300’s, but Zack Snyder did get better, bringing us more enjoyable fights in this movie than his 2006 movie. Speaking of which, I still don’t understand how can 300 get more fuss than Watchmen; I’m not saying it was a bad movie, but Watchmen was more original and better crafted.

As for the plot, then Watchmen isn’t your average superhero movie. It’s not the movie where you have the ultimate good guy, who hits rock-bottom and then rises to kick the bad guy’s ass, it’s a movie where many infamous superheroes collide, with each one being very far from the perfect good guy. Which is perfectly suitable, since it’s the post Vietnam war era, and all of our heroes were involved in the awful war, and most of them committed war crimes. That, in my point of view, is one of the story’s strong points. In addition, the superpowers were pretty original, since all the superheroes were practically enhanced normal human beings but with a large variety of Imagegadgets, except doctor Manhattan, who is a radioactive man with godlike powers. The other strong point was the fact that there was no “good versus evil” fight. Instead, the movie showed us how each of the characters was trying to adapt to the post traumatic war situation. But of course, there was one big mystery, and that was how The Comedian, one of the Watchmen, was killed. And while many of the superheroes were trying to deal with their imperfections, only one was trying to solve The Comedian’s mystery, the baddest badass Rorschach.

Speaking of the devil, Rorschach was without a doubt the best thing about Watchmen. He was the most infamous superhero of the Watchmen, being mentally unstable. He’s an extremely violent psychotic detective, with some badass skills and an epic mask. Awesome right? The mystery in Rorschach’s character gets you really attracted to our hero, and even after he reveals his secrets you still feel that there’s more to this character than the movie shows us. Not to forget his really important role in the story line. Personally, I consider Rorschach to be one of the best superheroes of all time, the compassionate and smart jerk that everyone would love.

In a nutshell, because of the original story, the infamous superheroes, and Rorschach, Watchmen is a movie to be appreciated. Not a masterpiece, could have been better, but it’s still good enough to watch and to be enjoyed. It’s a solid 7.5/10
