Man of Steel (2013)

For a director who did a good job delivering us Watchmen (link) and 300, Zack Snyder out did himself with Man of Steel. To be honest, I was starting to think that the only good movies DC could deliver were The Dark Knight trilogy and Watchmen, but Man of Steel proved that there’s still hope after all. We all wanted DC to give us more, and they did. Man of Steel  is without a doubt the strong comeback after Superman Returns and Green Lantern.

As we all know, Kal-El (Henry Cavill), aka Clark Kent, aka Superman, was sent to Earth by his parents because Krypton was on the brink of destruction. Here, we see Jor-El (Russel Crow), doing all he can to guarantee his son’s safety and try and stop General Zod (Michael Shannon) who’s attempting a coup d’état. We then see Clark 33 years later, with many flashbacks showing us how he tried to adapt as a kid, and how his human parents (Kevin Costner and Diane Lane) taught him to survive. However, guess who comes back to kill our hero? That’s right, General Zod and his followers.

Now as I already said, Zack Snyder did a good job on Watchmen and 300, giving us action packed moments and good fighting scenes. But this one proved that Zack Snyder is one of the most underrated directors today. Man of Steel  had the best fighting scenes since The Matrix. Yeah, that good! In fact, the whole movie was decently crafted and you don’t get that feeling that something is missing. I also enjoyed the actors’ performances, even the small roles were well taken care of. We have Henry Cavill who gave us a good Superman, Russel Crow who got back on track after the awful The Man with The Iron Fists, and Michael Shannon who impressed us in Boardwalk Empire and now in Man of Steel.

So, the promising cast and the promising director gave us a pretty awesome Man of Steel. And I can say that it’s the best super hero movie of the year so far, and will most probably keep this title. Anyone who likes Zack Snyder movies will enjoy it, anyone who thought Superman Returns sucked will be thankful for it, and basically anyone who’s into super hero movies will love it. Man of Steel: definitely a must see movie of 2013.

A solid 8.5/10
