What do you get when you put together a great story, pure performances, and some good directing? You get a romantic movie that made me smile like a little girl. Unlike movies filled with useless drama and the pathetic attempts to make you cry, The Spectacular Now brings you a perfect dose of drama, laughter, happiness, and sadness.
Meet Sutter (Miles Teller), a hard-partying high school senior who lives in the moment and has no plans whatsoever for his future, whose life changes when he meets Aimee (Shailene Woodley) , the far from typical “nice girl”.
The concept may sound washed out, but with the help of screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, James Ponsoldt did an exceptional job of hitting reality, turning the good novel written by Tim Tharp into a great movie that ranks among my favorite movies of 2013.
To complete the work of the director and screenwriters, we get the purest of performances by Shailene Woodley, who nailed the shy girl, the laughs of a teenager, and the tears of a broken heart. My heart skipped a beat just watching her stunning portrayal of Aimee. On the other hand, Miles Teller did a decent job portraying Sutter, giving us a different look at the “hopeless high school guy”, one we don’t see in other movies. To make things even better, the whole cast clicked together perfectly giving us a wonderful, and very realistic, overall performance.
We can say 2013 was a bad year for Hollywood, but movies like The Spectacular Now give me hope that some movies will always make you feel in love. It “hits you like a shot in the heart”.
Rating: 9.0/10. A spectacular romance that made me smile like a little girl.
